Spire staff Andy Wright, Neil Brunning and Charlotte Holley enjoy a race at the new playground.
Spire Homes and Apollo Services (part of Keepmoat Group) have transformed a blank canvas in to a children’s play area at the back of Spire Homes’ West Road flats in Oakham.
The area previously had concrete poles to act as washing lines, but they were hardly used. Spire Homes and Apollo decided to create a playground for local children with the space.
Apollo Services helped fund the project, and the new markings have brightened up the area and provided a safe and secure place for children to play. Residents and their children were consulted beforehand to find out which playground markings they liked best. The most popular choice was the race track and rocket hopscotch.
The play area was officially opened on Monday 19th August, with guest of honour Mayor Adam Lowe raising the chequered flag for the first race. Mayor Adam Lowe said "It is fantastic to see partnership working with Spire Homes, Apollo and the local Councils that not only benefits residents but embraces the environmental challenges. It is excellent use of a space that enables the children to run around and keep fit whilst in a safe environment right outside their homes. The provision of a bench made from recycled plastics for parents and guardians to sit on is just brilliant. Oakham Town Council can only applaud such investment in the planet and the families’ wellbeing in our Community".
Other guests included Leader of the Council Cllr Roger Begy, Cllr Richard Gale, Apollo staff Dave Scattergood, Julie Baker, Kaye Swift and operatives, and staff from Spire Homes.
Andy Wright, Housing Services Manager said “We provided residents with new rotary airers, and came up with an idea to provide a safe play space for families and their children who live in flats because they have no outside play space of their own. We recognise the importance of play in children’s development and somewhere to run about and get some exercise too and this new playground provides just that.”
“We are passionate about making a positive contribution to the communities in which we work and by helping Spire Homes with the play area and benches for the residents of West Road, we are providing a safe outdoor space for children to play whilst giving parents and carers a place to sit and watch their children enjoy the facilities. This project has been a huge success, improving the neighbourhood for the local community and we are delighted to have taken part.” Julie Baker, Community Investment Officer for Apollo.
