Illegal immigrants being housed at the back of rows of terraced houses in west London are trapped in squalor unable to return home, it has been reported.

A BBC investigation has revealed Indian nationals - who find themselves living among rats and rubbish in makeshift garden sheds and garages - are trapped in the UK after destroying identity documents that helped them gain entry into the country through traffickers.

It also revealed that some are paying as much as £800 a month as rogue landlords profit on their situations.

Ealing Council, which is responsible for the area visited by the BBC, is calling on the government for greater powers to inspect such buildings.

Although some of the immigrants want to be sent back to India, without their identity documents, the process is slow and complex.

A local charity, the Sikh Welfare Awareness Team, is providing some of them with food and clothing.

Volunteer Randeep Lall told the BBC: "They seem to be growing in number, the situation is getting worse but they have no choice but to live on the streets.

"Their cases have been logged with the UK Border Agency (UKBA), but the Indian High Commission is dragging its feet. It's disgusting they are being left to live like this. It's a mess."

The UKBA says it's working with the Indian High Commission on speeding up the process.

Last week, the London Borough of Hounslow urged the Indian High Commission to work in partnership with the council and other agencies to help around 50 homeless people living under the M4 flyover at Heston in West London.
