A stitch in time

Handicrafts for charity – Riverside’s Lorna Hughes and knitters Joan Cook, Angela Phillipson and Marie Gill with housing officer Janet McGimpsey
A close-knit group of Halton women are doing their bit to create woollen winter warmers for children’s and war heroes’ charities.
The Knit and Natter group was formed as part of Riverside’s LiveTime project – which provides access to social opportunities for older tenants to combat isolation and keep hobbies and interests alive.
The group meets weekly at the Palace Fields community centre in Runcorn. Over the last five weeks they have been busy knitting teddy puppet mittens for Operation Christmas Child. Help for Heroes will also benefit, with knitted hats for soldiers overseas to protect against freezing weather conditions.
Lorna Hughes is community engagement officer for Riverside in Halton. She said: “We asked our older tenants about the types of activities and groups that they wanted to see as part of Livetime. The Knit and Natter group is a great way for people to meet and put their skills towards a good cause.”
Joan Cook from the group said: “We are keen for others to join us. You don’t have to be an expert knitter. You can bring sewing or another hobby, or just come along for a chat, a natter and a cup of tea.”
The group is appealing for pure wool donations – particularly for the hats for heroes. If you can donate wool please drop it in at the Palace Fields community centre, or if you are interested in joining call Joan Cook on 01928 796 235 or just drop in.
