A party atmosphere was in the air this week, as elderly residents of Shaftesbury Court, Farnborough, got dressed up to the nines to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their independent living scheme.

Residents of Shaftesbury Court – which is managed by Sanctuary Housing – celebrated the milestone with a party in the communal lounge and several special guests.

Two delicious birthday cakes, made by resident baker Mary Andrews, were served to over 40 attendees alongside a glass of bubbly.  Party goers also shared stories and remembered much-loved former residents and Shaftesbury Court in years gone by.

Peter Holman, trustee of South and South East in Bloom, marked the occasion by presenting the residents of Shaftesbury Court with a Britain in Bloom national certificate of distinction, following recent success in the gardening contest.

Shaftesbury Court has been home to Farnborough residents aged 55 and over since it was first unveiled on 11th October 1986.  Amongst them is Mrs Eileen Hadaway, who has lived in the scheme since it opened 25 years ago and celebrated her 94th birthday recently.

When reflecting on her time at Shaftesbury Court, 94-year-old Mrs Hadaway said: “I have absolutely loved every moment of my time at Shaftesbury Court.

“It always hums with action here and everyone is so happy.  We really are like a family.  Here’s to the next 25 years.”

Richard Keeley, regional director of Sanctuary Housing, said: “What a fantastic day for both staff and residents.  It has been wonderful to celebrate the success of Shaftesbury Court and hear of the fond memories and enjoyable times had by residents over the past 25 years.”
