Somer Housing Trust and Connaught Partnerships Ltd get stuck into improving the garden area at Mountain Wood sheltered housing scheme
Residents of a sheltered housing complex near Bath have been given a timely treat for spring after the partners working on home improvements helped create a garden oasis free of charge.
Somer Housing Trust and Connaught Partnerships Ltd, who are working in partnership to deliver gas improvements to hundreds of properties in the area, have provided an easy access garden area consisting of a patio and raised flower beds at Mountain Wood sheltered housing scheme in Bathford, near Bath.
The project was undertaken after consultation with residents identified that they unanimously felt that an easy-to-maintain garden with wheelchair access would provide a much needed attractive addition to the complex and as a result all residents were involved in the planning process throughout.
The work was completed after a Neighbourhood Impact Grant covered the costs of all materials provided and representatives from North Radstock College and home improvement partners Somer Housing Trust and Connaught Partnerships donated their time to carry out the necessary physical work. Resident of Mountain Wood John Fleming said: “It is lovely to see that local organisations are willing to volunteer to make our lives pleasurable. Many of the residents here can’t get out and about so the garden will give us something easy-to-maintain and attractive to look at while we enjoy the spring sunshine.
“The Somer Housing Trust and Connaught staff, as well as the helpful local students, have been marvellous and their efforts are very much appreciated by everyone at Mountain Wood.”
Jacky Ryan, Connaught customer experience manager, said: “We are always keen to make a lasting impact in the community beyond our contracted works so when residents of Mountain Wood requested help with creating a nice garden area we were only too happy to help.
“At the planning stage we took into account all the requests made by residents regarding ease of access and an easy to maintain design and we are delighted to know that the end result will be much appreciated by all.”
Kevin Connell from Norton Radstock College's Horticultural Department designed the garden. He said: ‘We are pleased for the opportunity to work with the local community. Our students are able to gain valuable experience, practise their landscaping skills and leave the community a better place.’
Somer Housing Trust and Connaught Partnerships are working in partnership on a five year contract to deliver £6million worth of gas installations to properties across the area.
