Drivers on the M25 faced severe delays today after an accident closed the motorway in both directions.

Police said an articulated lorry collided with the central reservation between junctions 24 and 25 shortly after 2am.

The vehicle overturned, demolishing more than 100 yards of crash barrier and several lampposts as it shed its load of chipboard across the road.

The motorway is expected to remain shut clockwise between junctions 23 and 25, and anticlockwise between junctions 27 and 24 until this afternoon.

The closed stretches of road run clockwise from South Mimms to the A10 and anticlockwise from the M11 to Potters Bar.

A Highways Agency spokeswoman said no one was hurt in the crash but the aftermath caused "severe delays".

She said a large amount of debris was spilled from the lorry across both carriageways.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said a series of diversions are in place. He added that the road is expected to remain closed until at least 1pm.

He said: "Obviously, very long delays are expected."
