Are you recycling all you can-can?

Cancan dancers were in Hereford’s High Town last Wednesday (June 6) as part of an event to raise awareness about recycling.

Held to coincide with national Recycle Now Week, the event involved Herefordshire Council working in partnership with all the districts in neighbouring Worcestershire.

Kirsty Bethell, project assistant in Worcestershire County Council’s waste management services, and Debra Parker, recycling officer for Malvern Hills District Council, donned their frilly dresses and fishnet stockings to whip up a recycling frenzy among people visiting the Big Green Recycling Bus.

As part of the event, quizzes were staged and all those who took part were given a free jute shopping bag which will save them using plastic carrier bags. Everyone was entered in a draw for iPod Shuffle and the winner will be announced soon.

Laura Preece, Herefordshire Council’s recycling officer, said: “We thought using cancan dancers was a colourful and fun way to get across the message about a very important subject, asking if they are sure they are recycling all they can-can.

“We were really pleased with the turn-out and hope people gained plenty of useful tips on how they can increase the amount they recycle,” she added.
