South Bedfordshire District Council is inviting local schools with budding Olympic athletes to take part in this year's Bedfordshire Youth Games.

Now in its second year, the Bedfordshire Youth Games is the largest sporting event within the county and over 500 youngsters aged seven to 14 are expected to take part and get a taste of competitive sports.

A whole host of sports will be covered including: Athletics, Football, Cricket, Tag Rugby, Table Tennis, Tennis and Badminton.

Over the next week schools will receive a leaflet telling them what they need to do if they want to get involved but pupils are also invited to speak with their teachers and headmaster and tell them they are interested.

Schools who register will then be invited to a selection session and successful wannabe athletes will then join special squad training sessions to get them prepared for the big day on 17 June 2007 at Sandy Athletics Track.

Sport Development Officer for South Bedfordshire District Council Sara Stanbridge says: "This is such a brilliant event for kids across the district to show how good they are at their chosen sport. Wouldn't if be great if they helped their South Bedfordshire school become the counties youth game champions and then who knows they may even go on to compete in the London 2012 Olympics. This is part of our effort to encourage a more active district"
