Pioneering housing scheme for older people to open in Wirral

A new housing scheme that will enable older people to live independently for longer will be officially opened by Wirral’s Mayor, Cllr Peter Johnson, at midday this Wednesday, February 14.

The Harvest Court ‘extra care’ housing scheme in Moreton has been developed as a partnership between two Wirral Council Departments; The Department of Adult Social Services and the Regeneration Department, and Housing 21.

The scheme will offer older people a real alternative to residential care. Age Concern are developing services in the scheme that will promote healthy active ageing for residents and for the local community.

Harvest Court includes 40 flats, 14 of which are specifically designed for wheelchair users. All of the flats have level access showers and are also hard-wired for assistive technology.

Residents have access to communal lounges and a laundry within the scheme. In addition, there are communal facilities open to the local community including day care services, restaurant, hair salon, large lounge, health consulting room and an activity room.

‘Extra care’ housing enables Older People to maintain their independence by providing care and support in a safe environment. This aspect of the service, which is being provided by Goldsborough Home Care, ensures that each person receives an assessment and that care is tailored to meet their individual needs.

Speaking on behalf of all of the organisations involved in the project, the Chief Executive of Housing 21, Melinda Phillips Said: “Extra care housing is an exciting concept that gives older people and their families independence and peace of mind and provides a resource at the heart of the community.

“The accommodation at Harvest Court and the facilities are excellent. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who’s helped with the development of the project.”
