Children from the six schools which took part in creating the largest ever Walking Bus1, along with representatives from Leicestershire County Council, Ashby Town Council, Leicestershire Constabulary and North West Leicestershire District Council were invited to County Hall yesterday, to receive a certificate acknowledging their contribution to the event’s success.

One of the County Council’s fleet of yellow school buses collected guests from the schools2 and from North West Leicestershire District Council Offices and transported them to County Hall.

Chairman of the County Council, Barry Garner, said, “Everyone who was involved on the day should be very proud of their achievement, and it was a pleasure to be able to present the official Guinness World Record Certificates as a permanent reminder of an enjoyable and important community event, that raised awareness of the advantages of walking buses3.

Walking to school not only contributes to reducing harmful emissions from cars, but also helps keep children fit and healthy. Walking regularly can help to reduce the rise in obesity amongst children.”
