New kitchen in time for Christmas dinner

Delighted Evelyn Barnes will be cooking in style this Christmas thanks to the installation of a new kitchen by landlord Rushcliffe Homes.

Contractor Bullock fitted the new units, tiling and decoration in time for the 76-year-old to cook up a storm for the big day – and she can’t wait.

The new kitchen marks the end of the £15 million modernisation scheme promised to secure residents by Rushcliffe Homes when it took over Rushcliffe Borough Council’s housing stock in 2003. The work, carried out by contractors Bullock and Frank Haslam Milan, finished 18 months ahead of schedule.

To mark the occasion, representatives from Rushcliffe Homes and from Bullock called in on Evelyn – who has lived in the house since she was two – to present her with a festive hamper.

She said she didn’t mind being the last on the list and was delighted with the new kitchen, which features barley-coloured paint and maple cupboard doors.

“It doesn’t really make any difference that I was the last one they got round to. I am just glad it is finished. It is lovely,” said Evelyn, of Asher Lane, Ruddington.

“It seems much bigger now. Before there was a big wooden structure across the middle but that has been taken out. Everything has been replaced.

“The workmen have been wonderful over the two weeks it has taken to finish. Now I am really looking forward to cooking Christmas dinner.”

Evelyn also had a new bathroom fitted through Rushcliffe Homes’ menu modernisation scheme. The programme saw each eligible household given a number of points and then a list of possible home improvements, each with a point value. They could then pick and choose what work they wanted up to the value of their points.

The work was originally scheduled to be completed five years after the landlord took over management of the properties. Both contractors will continue to work with Rushcliffe Homes on Decent Homes work.

Stephen Cooke, maintenance officer at Rushcliffe Homes, said: “It is great to see a tenant so happy with their new kitchen. We hope she has an extra special Christmas now.

“The menu modernisation scheme has been a great success story for us and our partners. These were one of the things promised to tenants before they voted for us to take over from the council as their landlord. We have delivered well ahead of schedule and will continue to work on further improvements to ensure all properties meet the Government’s Decent Homes Standard before the deadline of 2010.”
