Deep cleanse for town streets

A fleet of grime-busting machines will be bringing the sparkle back to the streets of Ellesmere Port from next week.

The borough council has brought in the machines to carry out a deep cleanse of the town streets and pavements to get rid of persistent stains and chewing gum.

The heavy-duty “whirligigs” have been used successfully by other local authorities. The machines use an eco-friendly system of high-pressure water and scouring brushes to lift chewing gum and ground-in dirt. 

The work will cover Marina Drive (except for the red tarmac), Marina Walk, Rivington Road and the Civic Square.

Work will start in the week beginning Monday 23 October and last for a fortnight.

The cleanse has been scheduled to start at 3am each day, finishing by 10am, to cause as little disruption as possible to traffic, trade and residents.

Work near homes will start no earlier than 6am and, wherever possible, will start after 7.30am.

Waste Management Officer (Street Scene) Elizabeth Entwistle said: “We are trialling the deep cleanse machinery as part of the Town Centre Liveability Scheme.

“Other councils have given these machines a thumbs up so we are looking forward to seeing the effect on our streets.  We want our community to be proud of our streets but it is up to all of us to do our bit by using the litter bins and not throwing chewing gum on the ground.  Overall the council’s aim is to make the borough a cleaner and consequently a better place to live and work.”
