Colchester is to get its own community stadium after proposals were unanimously approved by Colchester Borough Council this evening [13 November].

And if all goes according to plan, work could begin onsite in the next 8 to 12 weeks.

Two hundred and fifty members of the public attended the full council meeting this evening, with more waiting for news in the High Street.

The council considered the business case for the project and agreed to make finance available to borrow the money needed to build the stadium itself.

A special meeting of the cabinet then convened and made the final decision to go ahead with the stadium plans.

Although the project has now received the green light, further work now needs to be carried out before building work could begin in the new year.

Cllr Robert Davidson, Leader of Colchester Borough Council, said: "I am absolutely delighted with the way the vote went tonight. It was a unanimous decision and a momentous day for Colchester. A lot of hard work has gone into making this a viable financial case for the residents of Colchester.

Colchester Borough Council, working with the Colchester United Community Sports Trust, Colchester United Football Club and Colchester2020 will now work to make the stadium a reality. This is a great day for Colchester."
