Golden footprints are appearing in Whitby Park and Stanney Woods as part of a new get fit scheme across the borough.

The footprints appear along one-mile circuits designed to encourage youngsters and their families to get fitter and healthier through walking.

Ellesmere Port and Neston Borough Council has produced leaflets with maps and descriptions of the short trails.

Families who take part will be joining 45,000 primary schoolchildren across England who are already clocking up Golden Miles using lines marked on their playgrounds over the summer holidays.

Children receive award certificates after they have walked totals of 10, 25 or 50 miles.

The scheme has been funded from the county’s Extended Schools pot and sponsored by Mornflake. The project is managed by the Ellesmere Port Education Improvement Partnership, working with the borough council.

The Mayor, Councillor Marie Lewis, and international women’s football player Sue Smith will launch the event in Ellesmere Port’s Whitby Park on Friday.

Midfielder Sue has been capped 56 times for England and helped her team, Leeds Women’s Football Club, reach the Women’s FA Cup Final this year.
