Salisbury: A city for our children's children

The next public phase of the Vision for Salisbury begins at the end of September with a three-day exhibition of the latest ideas on how to transform the city.
The exhibition takes place on 28 and 29 September at the White Hart Hotel and on the 30 September at the City Hall. The exhibition will be open from 2pm - 8 pm on the 28th, 10am – 8pm on the 29th and 10am – 4pm on the 30th. Everyone is encouraged to attend and have their say.
The Salisbury Vision project is a joint private and public sector initiative to revitalise key areas within the city of Salisbury whilst ensuring that its historic uniqueness is protected. The partnership’s aims are to create high quality facilities, new jobs and an improved and sustainable environment.
After several months of work, including consultation with a wide range of people, a number of options are emerging. Throughout the process a variety of ideas, some straightforward and some more radical, have been put forward for consideration. They have been debated, challenged and tested. Some of those ideas have survived, some have been amended and others discarded.
The emerging options form the basis of the public exhibition.
Cllr Richard Britton, Leader of Salisbury District Council said; “The aim of the Vision is to ensure that Salisbury is a city fit for our children’s children.
People from all walks of life have already contributed to the discussion including local businesses, school children, city centre workers and shoppers.
The exhibition will show a range of emerging options and the consultants working on the Salisbury Vision project now want to hear your views. They want to know what you, the people that live and work in Salisbury and south Wiltshire, think about your city and what you want for its future.
These views will form the basis of further consultation prior to refining the options into a firm set of preferred proposals to put to the council’s cabinet. The ultimate goal is to devise a plan which will shape the city over the next 15-20 years.”
The emerging vision sees Salisbury as a city based on a thriving centre with a high quality living and working environment. The Salisbury of the future will be strong economically and will provide quality, well paid jobs. The centre will be colourful and vibrant and it will be accessible to all both physically and socially.
New development will be introduced where it is needed but Salisbury’s unique and special character will be protected and enhanced. The city’s ancient chequer system of streets and its public spaces such as the Market Place will be developed as high quality, attractive pedestrian oriented areas.
And finally the natural environment upon which Salisbury was founded will be preserved and cared for as part of a future vision that has Salisbury as a forward thinking, clean, green and friendly city.
Anyone unable to attend the exhibition can still put their views forward to the Vision team by email (vision@salisbury.gov.uk) or by post to The Salisbury Vision, Salisbury District Council, 3 Rollestone Street, Salisbury SP1 1DX.
