A Tory MP has switched to UKIP, sparking a by-election in his Clacton constituency.

Douglas Carswell announced his intention to defect to the anti-Europe party and resign from parliament this morning.

The MP blamed Prime Minister David Cameron's attitude towards the Europe Union for his decision, and claimed that the Conservative Party was "no longer tenable".

With the general election only nine months away, Carswell will stand as the UKIP candidate in the forthcoming Clacton by-election that his defection has sparked.

And the politician, who won the 2010 election with a majority of 12,000, could be on course to become UKIP's first member of parliament.

In a press conference earlier today, Carswell slammed the Tory leadership. He said: "They are not serious about real change. It's above all the failure to deliver on the promise of political reform that has driven me to be here today.

"Europe's the one continent on the globe that is not growing. Yet who in Westminster, who among our so-called leaders is prepared to envisage real change?"

During 2009's infamous expenses scandal, it was revealed that the Tory backbencher had claimed for a £655 'love chair'. He had also 'flipped' his second home to avoid capital gains tax.
