Stroma is exhibiting in the network surgery at Sustainable Communities 2009, taking place on 12th November at Church House Conference Centre in Westminster.
Sustainable Communities 2009: Securing our Low Carbon Future aims to identify routes towards creating ‘sustainable communities’ in the UK; this is vital for supporting the emerging low carbon economy, promoting best practice for the future, and meeting national and global carbon reduction targets.
This year’s event will feature a series of master classes divided into three streams, each providing an educational platform from which to address and debate topical issues. Stroma has been invited to give a master class for the third stream, ‘Sustainable Operations in the Government Estates’, on the topic of intelligent buildings and has submitted the following synopsis:
“Stroma will outline their approach to improving energy performance and management in public buildings. At its core is the study of individual buildings in order to devise tailored improvement plans for each. However, the approach also recognises that maximising the carbon/energy reduction from financial investment can only be achieved if the overarching strategy is made at the portfolio level.
Stroma’s proven phased approach focuses initially on
reducing energy wastage through the fabric by means of comparative
performance assessment and targeted improvement works. Only after
this ‘fabric phase’ is undertaken are renewable energy
options considered and appraised as a means to provide additional
benefit, rather than being relied upon for the whole solution. This
approach can result in significantly reduced capital expenditure
whilst still delivering significant reductions in emissions and
running costs. Thereafter, the need for better controls, better
building management, and ongoing monitoring and targeting are
focused on.”
