A backbench Bill aimed at tackling climate change and promoting "green energy" was set to clear the Commons today.

Tory Peter Ainsworth's Green Energy (Definition and Promotion) Bill has cross party backing.

Opening third reading debate, Mr Ainsworth (Surrey E) said its purpose was to help the UK meet its carbon reduction targets, help tackle climate change and fuel poverty and increase the diversity of energy supplies.

He also hoped it would make it easier for households and businesses to generate energy themselves in a "more sustainable way".

The Bill, which applies only to England, requires ministers to consult on and publish a new microgeneration strategy.

"If the UK is seen to take a real lead in practical terms, it will greatly strengthen our negotiating position in vital international discussions taking place this year in the run-up to the Copenhagen summit," Mr Ainsworth said.

I am so happy for the people of England. I hope this is the advent of many more promising ventures like decentralized power generation to prevent blackouts and over unity energy technologies beyond the vanilla mainstream of solar and windmills. Do it like Iceland; they take advantage of their environmental conditions in the form of geothermal. We should all do the same: Take advantage of what nature gives us, then work with nature to come up with the best possible solutions.
