Disc missing from EDS, with details of over 700,000 Forces staff & recruits – comment from data security company Check Point

Following the announcement of the missing disc, Check Point, a leader in data security, says that this latest incident shows how lessons from previous Ministry of Defence losses have not been learned.
Nick Lowe, Check Points regional director for Northern Europe said: Less than two weeks ago, unencrypted data was stolen from on portable hard disc drives an RAF base, and now we have possibly the biggest ever data loss from the MoD -- again from misplaced portable drives.
When will organisations realise that the security of detailed, personal data of this kind cannot be left to chance? Portable discs and data cannot be left unprotected by automatic encryption, because they WILL go missing, be misplaced, or get stolen.
