Dementia Awareness Week 18 – 24 May: Guinness Care and Support Encourages Partners and Customers to Become Dementia Friends

Guinness Care and Support, a part of The Guinness Partnership, is working closely with the Alzheimer’s Society on their “Dementia Friends” initiative in support of Dementia Awareness Week. Guinness Care and Support is committed to improving the lives of people living with dementia and as such is pleased to work in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Society.

Dementia Friends promotes the Alzheimer’s Society’s objective to promote open discussion about dementia. A Dementia Friend is someone who is briefed by a Dementia Champion, an individual who can offer the knowledge and expertise to educate others about the challenges of living with dementia.

Guinness Care and Support is working across the country to increase understanding of this terminal illness which according to recent statistics from the Alzheimer’s Society is currently borne by 800,000 people in the UK.

Paul Watson, Managing Director of Guinness Care and Support says, “We are very pleased to back Dementia Friends and the Alzheimer’s Society. With increasing rates of diagnosis of dementia in the UK there is a strong likelihood that more people will be affected by this illness in some way; not just as people living with dementia but as carers or relatives.  Our priority is to raise awareness and provide training for our staff so that we can better help any of our residents with dementia.”

As well as active participation with the Dementia Friends initiative, Guinness Care and Support offers practical assistance. The housing association provides some accommodation designed for sufferers of early onset dementia. This accommodation offers supported living that allows individuals to enjoy their independence at home while having access to help if required.

Anyone interested in becoming a Dementia Friend is invited to sign up for a briefing session. More information about attending a local briefing session can be obtained by contacting Guinness Care and Support or via the Dementia Friends website
