Residents take step back in time to celebrate new Extra Care homes in Soham

Local residents took a step back in time when they came together to celebrate their new Extra Care homes in Soham. 

The special 1940s themed event on 25January was organised by Sanctuary Group as an official opening of Millbrook House, in Lode Close, Soham.  

The new Extra Care homes in Soham have been specially designed for people over the age of 55 and include facilities such as a restaurant, lounge, gym, shop, hair salon, landscaped gardens and a roof terrace.  

The scheme also has a dedicated on-site care team and a 24-hour emergency response service which is being provided by Sanctuary Care, part of Sanctuary Group.

During the opening, attended by Sir Jim Paice MP, new residents got the chance to show off their dancing skills with the help of entertainment from 1940s singing duo Timescape.

Andrew White, Sanctuary’s development director – commercial, said: “We wanted to do something to celebrate this exciting new development that made the most of the space and facilities available at this scheme. The 1940s theme was a great chance for new residents to get to know each other and have fun.”  

Sir Jim said: “Since the 40s life expectancy has risen by around 15 years and so schemes such as this, which allow older people to keep living independently in safe and secure environment, are going to become more and more important in the future. I am, therefore, delighted that there are now 92 more of these homes available in the Soham area.”

The new homes, which were made available to rent or buy through Shared Ownership, were part funded by the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) and supported by East Cambridgeshire District Council.

Kimberley York, HCA area manager, said: “Creating the right environment is every bit as important as delivering well-designed homes and high-quality facilities. Our grant of over £2.5m has ensured these safe, comfortable homes are affordable and we hope Millbrook House residents feel right at home from day one.” 

Cllr Tony Parramint, Chairman of East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: “The new Extra Care scheme will change lives by providing security, care and I hope friendships for local people.”
