A decision to ban the sale of poppies in 46 libraries was reversed today by a council.

Staff working at the public libraries in Derbyshire were told not to allow the sale of red poppies for the British Legion's annual appeal because it meant favouring one charity over others.

But today Derbyshire County Council said it was ditching its policy.

Councillor Andrew Lewer, leader of the authority, said: "We were not aware of a previous policy ruling out charity collection boxes in our libraries, including the annual Poppy Appeal.

"We are wholehearted supporters of the armed forces and I am very happy for libraries to make an exception and sell poppies on behalf of the Royal British Legion.

"To avoid any confusion about past policies, I will be letting libraries know they can sell poppies this year."
