Council by-election results: Round-up
Labour kept control of its traditional Barnsley Borough, South
Yorkshire stronghold in the latest council by-elections by beating
off a BNP challenge on a big swing.
Candidate Roy Butterwood boosted the majority at St Helens by
600.
But the far right had a near miss when Tories held on at
Lincolnshire County Council's Boston North West division by just 16
votes.
Tory winner Andrea Jenkyns finally secured her seat after having to
stand again when June's result was ruled invalid because of her
part time job as a tutor with the council-run music service.
Liberal Democrats and Labour swapped seats in the only two contests
to change hands.
At Northgate, Crawley Borough, West Sussex, Labour's Geraint Thomas
won with Lib Dems dropping from first place to third.
But Liberal Democrat Chris Collis came from third place to gain at
Heath Hayes and Wimblebury, Cannock Chase District, Staffordshire.
The ward's other councillor, elected in 2008, is a Tory.
