Tories got a mixed response from the voters after their conference with Liberal Democrats making the only gain in the latest council by-elections.

Their candidate Elissa Robinson scored a landslide victory to take an independent seat at Penrith West, Eden District, Cumbria, in a ward where the other councillor is Conservative.

Lib Dems narrowly missed another spectacular win after achieving a 31.1% swing from Tories at Grange Hill, Epping Forest District, Essex.

But the net swing was to Tories in two other contests.

At March West in Cambridgeshire's Fenland District, Labour, which did not fight last time, pushed Liberal Democrats into third place.

A result is expected later today at Pickering East, Ryedale District, North Yorkshire.

Eden District - Penrith West: Lib Dem 387, C 157, BNP 102, Ind 58, Lab 26, Green 18. (May 2007 - Two seats Ind 324, C 276, Lab 116). Lib Dem gain from Ind. Swing 2.4% C to Lab.
