The controversial move by the BBC to Manchester’s new MediaCityUK development in Salford Quays attracted widespread support at a keynote breakfast event this week.
Olympian Sir Steve Redgrave, an ambassador for Gleeds, who sponsored the event, joined Bryan Gray, Chairman of Peel Media Ltd and developers of the scheme, on a special localised version of the popular Question time panel to discuss the purpose built MediaCityUK complex. Other contributors on the panel included, Barbara Slater, Director of BBC Sport, Barbara Spicer, Chief Executive of Salford City Council, Felicity Goodey, Chairman of Central Salford Urban Regeneration Company and John Holland, Director of MediaCityUK for the University of Salford.
An invited audience of developers, journalists, planners, local authority and residents debated the move to Salford Quays by the BBC which will see all Sports, Children’s, Five live and Interactive services relocated to the new development.
Richard Steer, Senior Partner at Gleeds, who are cost consultants to Peel Media on the project commented, “With such a distinguished and senior panel the discussion of the development was both lively and informative. Obviously there are reservations from some people who will need to re-locate to Manchester from London but what is not in doubt is that the BBC will be the anchor tenant for a development that is already the envy of all those working in the media, from Hollywood to Bollywood.”
