Croydon business representatives seeking a steer on how to cope with the recession have a chance to hear from some top political leaders on 22 July.
Mayor of London Boris Johnson will be joined by representatives from the Federation of Small Businesses, Croydon's new economic development company, South London Business and the LDA and the Mayor's economic adviser, Anthony Brown, at a meeting that is being promoted as ‘Building a road to economic recovery' - an event designed to support local businesses through the recession.
To be staged in the Ashcroft Theatre, Fairfield Halls on Wednesday 22July, the session is expected to be a lively debate around the issues of economic recovery. It will focus on how businesses and residents can support each other through what is described as‘an unprecedented time'.
The evening session, starting at 7pm, is being chaired by Croydon and Sutton GLA member, Councillor Steve O'Connell who is also Croydon Council'scabinet member for regeneration and economic development. Admission is free and tickets may be obtained from the Fairfieldbox office either by calling 020 8688 9291 or online at www.fairfield.co.uk. For more information, visit www.london.gov.uk
Said Councillor O'Connell: "Even though Croydon is well-placed to emerge from the recession with a raft of major regeneration schemes in the pipeline, the day to day reality is that many high street businesses are struggling.
"To help, the council has already set up a new website - www.creditcrunch.org - that is packed with practical advice on how to survivethe recession. Readily available fromthe site is Croydon's economic recovery plan. At other levels we've taken steps to leave more money in people's pockets - by freezing pay and display charges and minimising the council taxburden as far as we can despite the inadequate level of government funding.
"The evening with Boris Johnson and a panel of expert speakers, is another step that shows we're on the side of local people, understanding their concerns and willing to listen and do whatever more we can. It will be a great opportunity for people to ask questions and tell those of us responsible for services in Croydon and London as a whole whatelse we should be looking at to help in these exceptional circumstances."
