Labour easily held off a strong challenge by Ukip in the only
council by-election this week.
The result at Rossmere showed a votes and majority increase for the
party since last year's main polls.
It is a badly-needed morale boost for Labour after a bruising week
for the Government and ahead of next month's crucial council and
European Parliament contests.
RESULT:
Hartlepool Borough - Rossmere: Lab 532, Ukip 300, Lib Dem 166, BNP
157, C 102. (May 2008 - Lab 488, Ukip 373, Lib Dem 258, C 197). Lab
hold.
Swing 4.8% Ukip to Lab.

Here is a comment from Bob Feal-Martinez:
Hartlepool by-election.
I note your report claims an easy victory for Labour. What it doesn't point out is that 500 postal votes were cast. 90% of those who use postal votes, vote Labour. It is known in political circles as the armchair vote.
Had there not been postal votes it is unlikely that Labour would win any elections, which is why Labour introduced the system.
