Former Olympic ice skating champion Robin Cousins, MBE, will turn on Exeter's Christmas lights, the City Council has revealed.

The Chief Judge from ITV's Dancing on Ice show will join Lord Mayor, Councillor Paul Smith, to officially switch on the dazzling display of thousands of Christmas lights on Tuesday 18 November at 6.15pm.

There will also be a display of pyrotechnics from the old Debenhams building.

Popular Gemini FM breakfast presenters, Matt and Dani will entertain the crowds from 5.30pm with family fun. Robin Cousins, who won the Olympic Ice Skating gold medal in 1980 and is choreographer of the latest Holiday on Ice show Mystery, will be joined on stage by two skaters in their spectacular show costumes.

The Christmas lights switch on will take place at the bottom of Castle Street just off the main High Street. This annual event kick starts the city’s festive programme of entertainment and activities with late night shopping launching later in the week on Thursday 20 November.

The evening will continue with fabulous world-class street entertainment in Princesshay Square from 6.30pm. People will be entertained by the famous Gandini jugglers arrive with their exciting and adventurous show. People will be able to watch as a series of multicoloured balls and clubs sparkle through the air in spirographic patterns, performed to a variety of music.

Cllr Stella Brock, Lead Councillor for Economy and Tourism said: "Christmas in Exeter is a very special occasion and this year will be no exception with a fantastic programme of events and thousands of dazzling lights throughout the city centre. Exeter is the ultimate shopping experience in a heritage destination with over 700 shops including all the favourite big brands as well as stylish boutiques and hundreds of unique independents."

Contributing to the outstanding display throughout the city centre will be over 35 Christmas trees, more than 500 flashing bulbs and 1,500 golf ball lamps.

Visitors to the city will experience the array of magical sparkling lights throughout the city centre from the High Street and Gandi Street to Fore Street and South Street, including spectacular displays in the Harlequins and Guildhall shopping centres as well as the Princesshay quarter.

Shoppers need look no further than Exeter for unique Christmas gifts and festive entertainment for all the family.
