Herefordshire Council’s sustainability and energy efficiency teams joined together on Friday to tackle climate change and reduce fuel poverty in Herefordshire by selling energy efficient light bulbs in Hereford’s High Town.

As part of their work with Severn Wye Energy Agency, they teamed up with local independent retailer, City Electrics to offer heavily discounted energy efficient light bulbs for purchase by Herefordshire residents.

Throughout the day, 230 bulbs were sold representing a carbon saving of 43.5 tons of CO2 over the lifetime of the bulbs. City Electrics and lighting manufacturer Megaman were on hand to offer advice and information on switching to energy efficient lighting. The team were also able to offer advice on other ways to reduce energy consumption.

Councillor Phil Cutter, Herefordshire Council’s energy champion, said: “It was wonderful to see so many people purchase energy efficiency light bulbs which last up to 10,000 hours or 10 times longer than standard incandescent bulbs. They also use 80 per cent less energy than traditional bulbs and this can save up to £60 over the lifetime of an energy saving bulb.

“We also told people about energy efficiency grants available to help cut fuel bills such as assistance for wall and roof insulation to help prevent warmth from escaping from their homes,” he added.

Councillor Cutter also attended a similar event for council employees at their Plough Lane offices.

If anyone wants advice on energy efficiency grant funding to help to reduce their energy bills, they can call the energy efficiency advice line on freephone 0800 512012.
