A man who evaded up to £13,000 a year in parking fees by fraudulently using his mother’s disabled parking badge has been fined by West London Magistrates.

Gary McCann, of Katherine Square, Kensington, used blue and purple disabled badges to park his Land Rover Discovery at locations across London

The 35-year-old, who also avoided paying up to £200 a year through the Congestion Charge Blue Badge exemption was fined £400 and ordered to pay £165 costs after admitting four separate offences under the Road Traffic Act.

Councillor Fiona Buxton, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Services at Kensington and Chelsea Council, said: “Parking is in short supply - because of this person’s actions in using his mother’s badges in her absence a genuinely disabled person has potentially been denied a parking space.

“On top of that he has potentially avoided paying £13,000 in parking fees and the congestion charge.”

Following a surveillance operation by officers from Kensington and Chelsea Council, McCann was ordered to explain his actions at West London Magistrates Court.

Electing to answer the charges by post, he explained that he was unaware he could not use his mother's disabled badges to gain free parking whilst she was several miles away at home. Despite this he pleaded guilty to the four offences.
