The leader of Liverpool City Council Warren Bradley has been re-elected for the second year running.

The 41-year-old Liberal Democrat councillor was elected during a ballot of 46 councillors at the city's town hall.

He had faced a challenge from Councillor Richard Kemp and Councillor Paul Clein.

Councillor Bradley said he was "proud" to retain his position as leader of the council.

He said: "I feel relieved and able to get on with the job. I told the party I have got a lot of unfinished business.

"I secured well over 50 per cent of the vote and I am very proud to be the leader of Liverpool City Council.

"There will be some changes on the board. There will be changes on the cabinet. It is important that we do move forward."

Dave Antrobus, chair of the Liberal Democrat group, said today: "The electing of a leader is an internal party matter which takes place every year.

"This is a process that the Liberal Democrat group goes through. The election will be ratified next week at the annual council meeting."

Earlier this month the Liberal Democrats held onto their majority in the council at the local elections after Councillor Bradley announced the Independent Councillor Nadia Stewart would join the group.

It left the Liberal Democrats with 46 seats in the new council with the
44 other seats made up of Labour, the Green party the Liberal Party and Independents.
