Leicester has made a shortlist to become the country's first "cycling city".

If successful, it could secure £6.75 million of Government money to transform the area into a network of cycle paths and a better place for cyclists.

The team behind the bid has been invited to meet Cycling England to discuss plans.

City council spokesman Patrick Kitterick said: "It's fantastic news that we've made the shortlist and that we are one step closer to being recognised as the country's first cycling city.

"We are confident in the strength of our bid and success would help bring about ambitious improvements to cycle routes across Leicester."

The local authority worked with Leicestershire County Council to put together the bid.

County council deputy leader Nicholas Rushton said: "The bid is all about providing better transport options to workplaces, shops, schools and the countryside for around 750,000 people."

If the bid is successful, the cycling city money will provide match funding to help achieve a number of goals by 2011, including the addressing of missing links in the cycle network in Leicester, more secure cycle parking and bike training for 80% of 11-year-olds.

Cycling England is expected to announce the winning towns and cities during National Bike Week (June 7-15).
