Plans to bring a new regional standard ice rink, swimming pool and leisure centre to Streatham have reached a major milestone with the signing of an agreement between Tesco – the developers, and Lambeth Council. The planning permission, Section 106 and development agreements detail the facilities and housing that Tesco will provide as part of this new development.
The project to develop the Streatham Hub will see major regeneration and improvements in the area, including the replacement of existing outdated leisure facilities and provision of 250 new homes – 87 of which are earmarked for social housing. It will also attract training opportunities for 400 new jobs in the area.
Councillor Paul McGlone, cabinet member for regeneration and enterprise said: “I am delighted that we have moved a step closer to delivering this exciting project. This is a huge scheme that promises to bring major improvements to the area and benefits for local people.
“As with any complex project, there is still some way to go before things start happening on the ground, but progress is being made and we continue to pass major milestones on our way to completing this project.”
James Wiggam, Tesco corporate affairs manager said: “We are delighted to have signed the agreement. This scheme offers a great deal to the local community – a new Tesco store, jobs and much needed housing alongside replacements for the ice rink, swimming pool and sports centre. This represents a huge investment in the future of Streatham.”
In addition to a new ice rink, swimming and sports centre, there will also be
• 250 news homes – 87 of which are earmarked for social housing
• Training opportunities for 400 new jobs in Streatham
• An improved transport hub – building a new bus terminal, creating an improved transport link and improving the train station
• Car parking facilities for 438 vehicles
• The replacement of a major sewer and improving other utilities in the immediate area
• General environmental improvements
• A major new Tesco store.
The scheme will now enter a final costing and design phase and works are expected to begin in Summer 2008 and to complete no later than the end of 2010.
