Sunderland City Council’s Children’s Services are helping children who are not yet toilet trained as part of Continence Awareness Week, which starts from Septemeber 17.
Children who are not toilet trained can experience difficulties settling in to school or nursery and may feel isolated from other children.
The law requires childcare and education providers to make reasonable adjustments for children with additional needs.
Officers within Children’s Services at Sunderland City Council work alongside childcare and nursery education providers throughout the city, to support parents of young children with a range of additional needs.
Parents with concerns about their child’s toilet training can contact their Health Visitor, who may work with them to complete a Continence Assessment.
This assessment looks at the child’s individual needs, their current level of bladder or bowel control and any support that they may need, either at home or within the setting.
Liz Clarke, Inclusion and Integration Team Manager, said: “Continence problems are typically associated with the older generation, but it is something that affects young children as well.
"Our aim is to get parents and professionals working together so that we can offer children the appropriate help and support as early as possible.”
Councillor Pat Smith, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services within Sunderland City Council, added: “This is an excellent example of the support offered to ensure that all children get the best start possible at school or nursery, irrespective of any additional needs or requirements.”
