People are being warned about the risks of buying a second hand car from internet auction sites, following the prosecution of a man who sold 'clocked' cars on Ebay.

Nicholas Kyprianou of Thornton, who created false service histories to make the mileage appear genuine, was prosecuted by Leicestershire County Council’s Trading Standards and was sentenced at Leicester Crown Court.

Kyprianou was sentenced to 2 years imprisonment for supplying six second-hand cars, all of which had false mileage readings.

Over 300,000 miles were removed from the six vehicles providing him with a net profit of around £22,000.

Kyprianou was able to increase the selling prices because of the lower mileage indications.

David Bull, Leicestershire County Council’s  Head of Trading Standards said: “Car ‘clocking’ is bad news for consumers, especially as they will most likely be faced with higher than expected maintenance costs - the court has emphasised the serious nature of these offences by sending the car trader to prison.

"The Trading Standards Service will continue to prosecute in such cases to protect Leicestershire residents and ensure legitimate businesses can compete fairly.”
