A psychedelic set of postage stamps will be up for sale to the public after an official launch by Liverpool's council leader and leading lady.

Councillor Warren Bradley and Liverpool's Lord Mayor, Councillor Joan Lang, will launch the new Beatles stamps which feature images of the band's most famous album covers today.

The collection of six stamps, which include covers of Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Abbey Road, Revolver, Let It Be and With The Beatles will go on sale for the first time tomorrow (January 9).

Councillor Warren Bradley said: "People can now buy these stamps and send letters with them on to all parts of the globe, which seems right as the Beatles' music has been played around the world for decades.

Liverpool has always been at the forefront of pop. The city's bands have had more number ones than any other city in the UK. These stamps will cement that reputation and hopefully attract even more visitors to the legendary city where Paul, John, Ringo and George grew up and discover what made the band so special."

Councillor Joan Lang said: "The Beatles are one of the most fascinating aspects of Liverpool's culture who have served as global ambassadors for the city. The release of these new stamps is a great chance to introduce their music to a new generation of fans and get them to explore our city's thriving new music scene."

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "The Beatles special stamps promise to be a big hit with fans the world over when they go on sale. Royal Mail is featuring some 1st Beatles album covers to commemorate the UK band that stands for all that's great in popular culture."
