The Tory group on Epping Forest District Council, Essex, took an overall majority when it gained a key seat in a by-election.

Their candidate Kewal Singh Chana won from Liberal Democrats at Grange Hill although the majority was down from last May when Tories had taken another ward seat.

The Tory group, which includes one Conservative and Resident councillor, now has 30 of the authority's 58 members.

In the week's only other by-election there was a swing to Labour since 2003 in its Skerton West stronghold at Lancaster.

RESULTS: Epping Forest District - Grange Hill: C 609, Lib Dem 586, BNP 302, Lab 48. (May 2006 - C 908, Lib Dem 753. Ind 97). C gain from Lib Dem. Swing 3.7% C to Lib Dem.

Lancaster City - Skerton West: Lab 493, C 172, BNP 93, Ind 76 . (May 2003 - Three seats Lab 657, 645, 594, C 297, Ind 265, 242, Socialist Alliance 183, Green 127, 109; June 26 2006 by-election - Lab 826, C 336, BNP 220). Lab hold. Swing 7.9% C to Lab.
