Young Jessica Ward rallied colleagues to raise money in memory of a friend who lost her battle with cancer.

Jessica, 17, from Ferryhill,  was moved by the plight of Liane Robertson, a 26-year-old soldier and mother of two from Ferryhill, who died of cervical cancer just before Christmas.

She said: “Liane was my best friend’s sister. We were all struck by how awful it was for Liane and her family and wanted to do something to help. Sadly she died before I could organise something at work but we carried on anyway.

“Colleagues at Dale & Valley Homes brought in their unwanted Christmas presents and we arranged a raffle. There were some fantastic prizes because what it unwanted by some people is treasure for others. People were very generous.

“In the end we collected £86, which we have donated to Macmillan Cancer Care, who helped look after Liane.”

Friends and relatives continue to raise money in Liane’s memory, including her sister Sam, who will be covering the 60 miles fromLondontoBrightonon foot in 24 hours.
