West North West homes Leeds (WNWhL) have launched a new Independent Living Service for customers in sheltered properties. The new service will respond to customers’ changing needs in a more flexible way and will give customers a level of independence and security which they choose.

WNWhL manages 52 Sheltered Housing Schemes, housing around 1700 tenants and have been successful in bidding to continue to manage this service for the next three years. To modernise the service WNWhL have been asking their sheltered customers what changes can be made to improve it.

A key part of modernising this service has been the merging of the Tenancy Support Team and Sheltered Housing Team to form the Independent Living Team. This has helped WNWhL to offer a high level of housing support focusing on independent living and ensuring support from partner agencies when required.

Tenants have been able to choose how many visits they receive from their Scheme Managers and whether they wish these to be in person or by telephone, text or email. Scheme Managers are also involved in joint viewings with potential customers to explain what the Independent Living Service can provide. This helps identify any support needs at an early stage, which can then be acted upon to ensure a smooth and problem-free move into their new home.

WNWhL are currently consulting with tenants and looking to expand the range of activities offered to their customers in Sheltered Housing with the aim of fighting isolation, encouraging friendships and improving recreational activity. At the moment several schemes are planning Easter and Royal Wedding celebrations.
