A Sydenham-based residential care home has been the first to benefit from a pioneering recycling project, which converts plastic paint containers into park benches for the community.

National painting and maintenance contractor Seddon Property Services has joined forces with Crown Paints to develop the project.

To mark the start of the initiative, representatives from Seddon Property Services and Crown Paints presented a bench to residents at William Wood House, which is managed by not-for-profit housing association, L&Q.

The new bench, made from 400 plastic paint containers, has been placed in the conservatory area at the development.

Under the recycling scheme, Seddon Property Services takes its empty Crown Paint containers to selected Crown Decorator Centres, where the containers are then sent to a specialist company and manufactured into benches for community use.

Other products such as rubbish bins can also be produced from the recycled material.

Neil Fraser, Seddon Property Service’s environmental manager, said: “Seddon has a track record of working to protect the environment.

“We were among the first companies to achieve the international standard ISO 14001, which ensures companies meet high standards in protecting the environment.

“We are determined to improve standards even further and are pleased to be able to help spearhead the paint container recycling campaign, with Crown Paints and their Crown Decorator Centres.”
