Work has commenced at St Catherines Mews, Ashby, bringing much needed affordable homes to this part of Scunthorpe. The development, consisting of fourteen homes, will include 6 four-bedroom, and 8 two-bedroom properties available for local families to rent by housing association Longhurst & Havelok Homes.

The homes due to complete in July 2010 will not only be the first Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4 to be built in Ashby, Scunthorpe but will also be the first to be built in North Lincolnshire delivered by Longhurst Group on behalf of Longhurst & Havelok Homes.

The development is being carried out in conjunction with local contractor TG Sowerby Developments Ltd as a joint venture.

Tenants will benefit from a high contemporary finish including;

• 2 and 3 storey accommodation with under house parking.
• Cedar and glass balconies and first floor living space.
• The layout of the scheme will create a communal open space within the heart of the development.
• Solar panels, energy efficient boilers and rainwater harvesting will also be installed. As a result tenants can expect to pay lower utility bills.
• Two of the 4-bedroom units will also incorporate all 16 elements of the Lifetime Homes Standard.

To celebrate the start of the development, which took place on Thursday 10th December, Sidney McFarlane, Chairman of Longhurst & Havelok Homes (L&H Homes) and Cllr Mick Grant, Cabinet member for Housing and Strategic Planning, at North Lincolnshire Council joined guests to mark the occasion of the scheme officially starting on site.

Sidney McFarlane MBE, Chairman of Longhurst & Havelok Homes commented “L&H Homes are thrilled to be part of this sustainable development scheme, which is a good example of partnership. This project meets L&H Homes’ twin strategic objectives of not only providing sustainable development now and in the future, but also continuing to provide much needed affordable homes for the benefit of local residents”.

Simon Dillon, Project Manager for Longhurst Group commented “We are delighted to be involved in this joint venture with TG Sowerby Developments Ltd to provide innovative and contemporary affordable family housing for rent in North Lincolnshire”.

Cllr Mick Grant, Cabinet member for Housing and Strategic Planning for North Lincolnshire Council said "I'm absolutely over the moon to see work start on this site. It is much more than a few houses, it's about the Council working in partnership. Partnership to provide affordable housing that is not only energy efficient, but also contemporary and attractive. This development will see real outcomes for real families - right here in Ashby and for generations to come. Credit must go to Longhurst Group and Council officers for making this happen."
