Teams from Blind Life in Durham and Dale & Valley Homes
Three teams of novice new age kurlers joined experts from Blind
Life in Durham for a fund raising and awareness challenge.
The novices from Dale & Valley Homes were blindfold as they
played against each other and the team from Blind Life.
Despite the best efforts of their colleagues, who were full of
advice about how the reach the target, the Dale & Valley Homes
Teams were all beaten by Blind Life.
The event raised £200 for specialised IT equipment for Blind
Life in Durham.
Organiser Jackie Hall said: “We decided to set up the
challenge as a fun thing for staff, to raise money for a local
organisation and to give people some idea of what it must be like
to be blind or visually impaired.
“It was a really successful event. Everyone enjoyed
themselves, got to grips with the new game and mixed really well.
Staff realised the skills blind people have which the rest of us
don’t, how losing one sense means you use your others.
“New age kurling is a version of traditional kurling that
does not need ice. There are adaptations so anyone can play, even
people in wheelchairs.
“We are hoping to have a re-match once the Dale & Valley
teams have had a bit more practice because this time the Blind Life
team scored as many points as our three teams put
together!”
