Council tenants in Wear Valley are being reminded to carry on paying their rent through the festive season.
Managers at Dale & Valley Homes, which manages the area’s council homes, are warning customers that missing rent payments could mean losing your home.
Kath Wright, neighbourhood manager for the company, said: “We appreciate that people have a lot of demands on their cash at this time of year, but ignoring essentials like rent only stores up problems for the future.
“If you don’t pay your rent you could end up losing your home, which is not something we would want to happen to families at any time.
“We can help customers who feel they are in financial difficulties and would urge them to contact us sooner rather than later.
“Recently we had one customer who was about to lose her home because she had repeatedly ignored our efforts to contact her. A last ditch attempt by one member of staff persuaded her to face the problem.
“Now she is receiving more benefits, has cleared her rent arrears and is much happier.
“Eviction was a real possibility if she had not faced up to the situation.
“We can give people advice on claiming benefits, managing their budget and other aspects of managing their tenancy.”
Anyone who would like advice on managing their tenancy should contact Dale & Valley Homes staff on 0800 083 0333.
