Baxi Ecogen at glittering iawards

Baxi Ecogen micro-CHP joined some of Britain’s most innovative products and businesses at the iawards gala dinner at the Science Museum, a fitting venue for the occasion. The glittering event was hosted by TV ‘dragon’ James Caan and Science and Innovation Minister, Lord Drayson.

Mark Kelly, CEO of Baxi Group UK and Ireland, said: “We are delighted to have been selected as a finalist for these prestigious awards, alongside the very best that the UK has to offer.

“We believe that micro-CHP will be the biggest change in the home heating industry since the introduction of the condensing boiler, and that Baxi Ecogen will lead the way, as the first domestic micro-CHP unit to be available commercially.

“We are very proud that the years of development and hard work have resulted in a product that will be readily accepted by the mass market as a straightforward replacement for a conventional wall hung boiler, address the issue of fuel poverty and reduce carbon emissions.

“And because the Baxi Ecogen generates electricity while it heats the home and hot water, it could, in future, offer independence from the National Grid, reducing the risk of power cuts.”

Baxi Ecogen was shortlisted for ‘The Next Big Thing’. The category recognised innovation in any area which supports our society and is yet to be fully commercialised to its widest potential. As with all categories, each entry had to illustrate how its innovative qualities relate to at least one of the following challenges:

• Addressing the healthcare needs of an ageing society;
• Increasing international security from tackling global poverty to minimising the threat of terrorism;
• Preserving finite natural resources in the face of population growth and climate change;
• and delivering public services which make best use of new technologies.

The other finalists in the category were Argento Diagnostics Ltd and the winner, Diverse-Energy Ltd.

The iawards, in association with QinetiQ, were launched by Lord Drayson and James Caan in July to celebrate the best of British science, technology and innovation. As such, all entrants had to specify the British involvement in their innovation - demonstrating that innovative thinking and development came from a British organisation or team.
