On Thursday 29 October and Friday 30 October residents at Pollards Hill in South London celebrated Black History Month with some culturally themed events at the Pollards Hill Library on South Lodge Avenue. On Thursday there was African story telling by ‘Snail Tales’ and African mask making. On Friday there was a second chance to get creative and make an African mask.

Moat and the Pollards Hill Library worked together to organise these events. The celebrations promoted cultural awareness and recognised the importance of working together to build a stronger community. As well as the above events there were also ten fiction books, written by award winning black writers, on display at the Library for attendees to take a look at. These will be available to borrow from the library in the coming weeks.

Local resident, Carla Marsland, (age 11), says; “Today was so much fun! I’ve never made an African mask before and I’m really pleased with what I managed to make. The story telling was great as well because the stories were ones that I’d never heard before.”

Anette Cerabino-Read, Moat’s neighbourhood manager at Pollards Hill, says; “It is so important to celebrate diversity and Pollards Hill’s greatest strength is the huge variety of residents with different cultural backgrounds. At Moat we want to promote these cultures and these events, as part of Black History Month, provided a great opportunity to do so.”
