Staff from Medway Council, MSEP and Moat, cleaning up Medway Riverside Country Park in Gillingham, Kent Staff from Medway Council, MSEP and Moat, cleaning up Medway Riverside Country Park in Gillingham, Kent

Thirteen members of Moat staff volunteered with Medway Swale Estuary Partnership (MSEP) and Medway Council to clean up Medway Riverside Country Park in Gillingham, Kent on Monday 26 October. The clean up was organised by Medway Council as part of Kent Coastal Week which saw over 50 events and visiting opportunities take place along the Kent coast line between 25 October and 2 November.

At low tide between 10am and 3pm the volunteers collected litter and other debris dumped in the river and in the afternoon they cut back the vegetation in the riverside area, to make the area more of a beauty spot for those spending time in the park.

Moat staff worked with MSEP and Medway Council to support the event as part of a commitment for staff to become more involved in Moat communities and to increase knowledge of all areas of the organisation. Successful partnership working is always a priority within Moat and the clean up is a prime example of working together to improve the local landscape.

Mark Loos from the Medway and Swale Estuary Partnership, says; “The role played by volunteers in keeping the River Medway clean is an important and often unrecognised one. The MSEP and Medway Council would like to thank all of the Moat volunteers who did such an excellent job in helping us to make the river a cleaner place for everybody.”

Lara Bartsch is Moat’s neighbourhood manager in Medway and says; “We wanted to take part in a community project which was fun for those involved and which served a purpose. This clean up was the perfect chance for us to spend some time outside the office and improve the local area. We all had a great day and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It has been lovely to get out into the community and do something other than our normal day to day roles at Moat.”
