The first refurbished property of an award winning housing regeneration project in New Houghton, Bolsover is now complete.

Meden Valley Making Places (MVMP), the group co-ordinating the regeneration of poor quality and low demand housing in former mining communities across north east Derbyshire and north Nottinghamshire, is refurbishing a total of 110 terraced properties in the area whose condition had declined over the years.

The large scale refurbishment project in New Houghton is being delivered in partnership with developer Frank Haslam Milan and Bolsover District Council.

Extensive consultation processes have been established with community members ensuring residents are fully involved and informed with the on-going work.

Tracey Devlin, whose home has now been transformed, said: “Having lived here for five years, I have long been aware that the area was in need of a revamp.

“Because of the age of the houses many of them were in such a poor state of repair. Refurbishment has made my house a home again. I now have a newly fitted bathroom and kitchen, along with a new roof and damp proofing throughout.

“With most of these properties over a hundred years old, a great deal of refurbishment will be needed. Without it, things would have become much worse.”

Gary Kirk, Chief Executive of MVMP, said: “These properties were desperately in need of the refurbishment programme that is now underway. Once completed, it will not just be the homes themselves that have been improved but the whole village will be lifted.”

Joint funded by MVMP and Bolsover District Council, properties in Verney Street, Portland Street and Crompton Street will benefit. The work involves re-roofing, replacing windows, doors, paths and fencing, new kitchens and bathrooms, and electrical rewiring.
