When you think back 100 years to 1909 the world was a very different place than today. Woolworths had just opened its first store.
- A manual worker earned 23 shillings a week,
- A dozen eggs costing a shilling
- A pound of butter 1s2d
- A pint of beer two shillings.
- A pair of ladies’ shoes cost 7s11d, a man’s suit 6s11d and a girl’s school frock 2s8d.
Community Gateway Association (CGA) resident Edith Harwood who recently reached the milestone of 100 years old, it was a time for celebration and reflection on a life that has seen many changes not only in the world but also in her home town of Preston.
Edith lives at Almelo House one of CGA's sheltered accommodation
properties, joined by family and friends a surprise party was
arranged to commemorate the day.
Rose Kinsella Chair of CGA's Board and Dave Warlow Director of
Operations presented Edith with flowers and best wishes from
colleagues at CGA to honour this outstanding
achievement .
As is traditional for someone who reaches 100, Edith received her
card from the Queen, and also other cards and presents from
well-wishers and family members from across the country who wanted
to be part of the occasion.

celebrations. It was lovely to see all her friends and family
celebrating a wonderful lady. The residents at Almelo House think
of her very fondly and it was great to see everyone enjoying
themselves at the party”
