A community fun day in Beechdale has been hailed a massive success after around 200 people turned up to take part.

The sun shone for Beechdale Community Housing Association’s fun day on Saturday (25th July) and the estate was a hive of activity.

June Moriarty, Chief Executive of Beechdale Community Housing Association, said: “The day was very well attended with lots of tenants and residents coming along. I am delighted that so many people turned out to support the community and particularly the young people of Beechdale.

“A big thank you must also go to all those who worked so hard to make it a success and I am delighted that we have been able to raise money for good causes in the process.”

Mayor of Walsall Councillor John O’Hare officially launched a fun run/walk around a one-mile route of the estate at 12noon which was followed by a dance display in Beechdale Lifelong Learning Centre.

The day’s fun was centred around Stephenson Square and also included children’s rides, a barbecue, stalls, face painting and a community market.

Visitors were also excited to meet guest Dominic Harris a talented young singer who has appeared on Kids Stars in Your Eyes and X Factor.

Dominic, a student at Sutton College, won his round on Kids Stars in Your Eyes by emulating singer Lemar and then came third in the public vote of the live grand final.

He then entered X Factor in 2007 and was told by judges he had something special, narrowly missing out on the live shows, but he has entered X Factor 2009 and has secured a place at boot camp.

The total amount raised by the community day is still being calculated and all proceeds will go to Acorns Children’s Hospice and KABS Holistic Coaching Services, BCHA’s coaching scheme for youngsters.

KABS is a programme which provides diversionary sports and dance activities for youngsters aged between eight and 16.

Regular sessions take place at Beechdale Lifelong Learning Centre, plus athletics coaching at both local and top national sports stadiums to give youngsters something constructive to do with their spare time.
