KHT team in Race For Life
Some ran, some walked and some were pushed by friends in wheelchairs. Many were dressed for comfort, others dressed for speed, but most were clearly dressed for fun, with an array of pink stetsons, wigs and tutus on display. No matter what their level of fitness, their abilities or for that matter their disabilities, over 2000 people came to Knowsley Hall on a Tuesday night with one thing in common. They all it seemed had in some way been touched by cancer, either personally or through family and friends and were united by their determination to raise money for Cancer Research.
The Race For Life consisted of a 5 kilometre course through Lord Derby's back yard. After a motivating welcome speech from an announcer on the stage and a mass rendition of the Cha Cha Slide, they were off. The field, including an intrepid gang of fund raisers from KHT, set off through the stunning grounds of Knowsley Hall, recieving little more than a sidewards glance from the many herds and flocks of farm animals that grazed in the grounds. Lots of the runners had the names of family members and friends who had suffered from cancer pinned to their backs, some had even handwritten defiant messages about beating cancer on their clothing. As the field of entrants swept by all you could hear was talking and laughing. As one entrant went by, she was overheard to say to her mate "even the sheep are running faster than us".
The KHT team all started off together, but it soon became
clear that whilst some crossed the starting line looking at their
watches, others were making a mental note of where the First Aid
tent was - just in case. Regardless of how long each of them took
to eventually complete the course, we and they should all be proud
of what they did and what they've achieved in raising hundreds of
pounds for Cancer Research. Congratulations to everyone who took
part.
